The good: The Toshiba Gigabeat S makes its mark as a supercompact 30GB or 60GB portable video player. It supports many music, video, and photo file types, including subscription services, and it has a bevy of features, such as an FM tuner and support for digital camera transfers. Best of all, the device is completely intuitive, thanks in part to an improved Portable Media Center operating system, and it boasts excellent sound performance.

The bad: Unlike many portable video players, the Toshiba Gigabeat S does not record audio or video. There is no voice or FM recording, and the two-cable AC adapter is cumbersome. Also, the Gigabeat S is an MTP device and requires Windows XP. Finally, rated battery life for video is weaker than Toshiba had originally suggested.

The bottom line: Many prospective MP3/PVP buyers have been waiting patiently for this compact, easy-to-use, one-stop shop for media files--looks like the Toshiba Gigabeat S was worth the wait.

USB Pencil Sharpener

Intel invented the Universal Serial Bus and Apple was primarily responsible for popularizing it initially. Now USB is everywhere and in nearly everything – even if it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Close to the top of the heap of nonsensical USB gadgets is the torturously named USB pencil sharpener. Does it only sharpen USB pencils? The name reminds me of “Processed Cheese Food” – is that what they feed cheese?

Plug the pencil sharpener into any USB port on your computer and worry no more about broken or dull graphite. I imagine the only function the USB port provides is 5 volts DC power. I can’t fathom any data transfer would be going on. As silly as this seems, at least they didn’t include that other ubiquitous device of our go-go modern internet age – the MP3 player. I think if any company were foolhardy enough to release a USB enabled pencil sharpener with built in MP3 player then the Seventh Seal would be broken and all the good and righteous people of planet earth would ascend to heaven. I can see it now – me sitting at my desk, idly sharpening a good old #2 pencil while the strains of some illegally downloaded MP3 come liltingly out of the sharpener and certain people begin to float up into the sky. “Wait!” I cry, “at least I didn’t buy the Bluetooth enabled version!”

Ride On (your suitcase)

Kids and airports don’t mix. Your tired and you just want to sleep, your baby is crying because they are bored, meanwhile every one who passes you gets annoyed by the constant crying. If you are on your own traveling with a child, you will know exactly what I’m talking about. You can’t possibly be expected to carry your luggage and a buggy with a screaming baby. We all know the wheels on buggy’s never steer straight and you end up having to force it to go the way you want as well as pushing your luggage around.

As if a buggy and luggage isn’t enough to contend with, you have to fold the buggy up (while holding your child) and squash it into the over head lockers, meanwhile holding up everyone on the plane. It’s enough to put you off traveling with young children again.

If you have experienced this or know someone that does, assure them that there is an answer. Its called ‘Ride on Carry on’. An excellent way to get your luggage and child from A to B with minimal effort and only two hands are required.

It’s a chair designed for toddlers (up to 401bs) and it simply straps onto the back of your rolling luggage and folds easily to out in the over head compartment. It looks so simply, you wonder why it wasn’t invented years ago.

I think its worth paying $42.75. The chair is made from a 100% washable and durable fabric and can fit to all 18” to 22” carry on bags. It can be removed and installed easily within minutes.

You can see how this is going to be how toddlers travel in the future. So convenient and practical. I wouldn’t be surprised if mothers at the airport asked you where you got this contraption, no doubt they’ll want one too.

The P990 will be the first commercially available smartphone to adopt the enhanced Symbian OS version 9.1 and UIQ 3 software platform. This flagship UMTS smartphone is Wi-Fi enabled, has a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus and features a new hardware keyboard beneath the flip-down keypad. The phone will start shipping during Q1 of 2006.

The P990 is the next in a line of successful Sony Ericsson smartphones - the P800, P900 and P910 – and is based on the same proven concept and recognisable form factor. All have been popular with users, operators and software developers thanks to their powerful productivity features. Operator feedback and download statistics from the Sony Ericsson Application Shop have shown that consumers, both business and personal, are interested in using their smartphones to the fullest potential. Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) can be as high as 4 to 5 times that of more traditional voice-centric mobiles.

To ensure a large proportion of applications are available on the new Symbian and UIQ software platform when the P990 goes on sale, Sony Ericsson has decided to announce the smartphone well in advance of availability so that developers have time to create and certify as many applications as possible.

As with its predecessors, the P990 is designed to be first and foremost a great mobile phone. It also offers all the benefits of UMTS including video calling, high-bandwidth multi-media downloads and the ability to browse the Internet with full HTML pages. These are viewed in landscape on the new Opera 8 browser. In addition, the P990 is prepared for all major push e-mail clients enabling full e-mail access with attachments, anywhere, anytime.

The P990 has multiple text input methods enabling it to support all users’ needs and preferences. Writing e-mails is made easier by the new hardware keyboard positioned beneath the flip-down keypad on the main body of the phone. Reading them is made simpler on the large 2.8 inch QVGA touch screen. Multi tasking – being able to browse the Internet, send and receive files at the same time as talking – is now possible due to the enhanced capabilities of the new software platform.

Memory has been extended in order to handle all multi-media downloads and e-mail attachments. Memory Stick PRO Duo up to 4GB will be available in the market at launch and the P990 now has up to 80 MB user free memory. A 64 MB Memory Stick PRO Duo is included in the box, preloaded with a VPN client and trial version of a virus scan package.

The combination of UMTS and WLAN features will also significantly improve the efficiency and flexibility of applications such as e-mail, browsing the Internet/Intranet and video telephony. WLAN, available in hot spots all over the world, acts as a complement to high speed 3G services, enabling widespread access to corporate network services.

Other new features include automatic time zone change to the Calendar diary and updated PC sync software with extended synchronization possibilities. Additionally the 2 Megapixel camera with autofocus, digital zoom, photo light plus the bright TFT screen and video recording provide a high quality imaging experience.

The P990 will be commercially available in Q1 2006. The variants will be:

Nokia N92, the world’s first integrated DVB-H mobile device in the Nokia Nseries range for watching broadcast TV programs. The Nokia N92 offers easy access to TV programs without having to sit in front of a television set. Users can set reminders to watch their favourite TV programs, create personal channel lists and subscribe to TV channel packages.

The outstanding new form factor offers a highly ergonomic user-experience. The usability is further enhanced by the large 2.8” anti-glare QVGA screen with 16 million colours and the dedicated media keys that deliver a rich viewing experience.

The Nokia N92 has four different modes for simple and easy usage. The new view mode is especially designed for watching TV and video. To start watching mobile TV, users simply need to open the Nokia N92 in view mode and press the Multimedia key. The Electronic Service Guide (ESG) contains information about the available TV channels, programs and services. Other mobile TV features include watching time of up to four hours, recording and 30 seconds replay.

The cellular connectivity means people can interact with the TV, through services such as voting, program feedback and additional web discovery. Further, the Nokia N92 supports the new Nokia Web Browser with Mini Map, which provides a semi-transparent zoomed-out view of a web page that enables users to quickly orient themselves on a small screen. With an overall view of the web page, users can intuitively navigate to all corners of it as well as see the web page as it was originally designed.

The Nokia N92 is also an XpressMusic device, with up to 2 GB memory card support, offering storage for up to 1500 songs delivered through the built-in stereo speakers or a stereo headset. The entertainment experience is further complimented by FM radio with Visual Radio support. Additional Nseries features include 2 megapixel camera for print-quality photos and email attachment support.

The Nokia N92 provides a rich range of connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, infrared, Bluetooth wireless technology as well as USB 2.0 (Mass Storage Class), which allows users to connect the Nokia N92 directly to a compatible PC for quick and convenient file transfers or downloads.

The Nokia N92, which is based on S60 3rd Edition and Symbian OS, is planned to be commercially available in mid 2006 in Europe, Africa and Asia, in countries where DVB-H services are available, with an estimated, unsubsidized sales price of approximately 600 Euros (2720MYR).

WHILE the best way to surf the Internet is through a web browser on a PC, there are times when it’s simply not an option.

For example, you might be away from home – on holiday and without an Internet connection. Or you might find yourself in a situation where it would be inconvenient to lug a bulky laptop to a WiFi hotspot.

But not to worry – there are an increasingly large number of devices that allow you to surf the Web without a PC and we’ve brought together four types to prove the point – a Pocket PC (HP iPaq Hx4700), a smartphone (Dopod 577W), mobile phones that support Java and a handheld videogame console (Sony PlayStation Portable).

While this is definitely not an exhaustive list of devices, we believe that they provide a general idea of the alternative web browsing methods available today.

Getting connected
Each of our test devices connects wirelessly to the Internet through one of two means: A WiFi connection or through a cellular service (such as GPRS or 3G).

The iPaq and PSP both use WiFi connections, which means they need to be within range of a WiFi access point – either a private wireless LAN router in your office/home or at a public WiFi hotspot.

The iPaq (which is functionally similar to other Pocket PCs) runs on the Windows Mobile 5 for Pocket PC operating system and has an easy-to-use dialogue box that scans for all WiFi access points in range and gets you connected immediately (prompting you for a WEP key if it’s a protected network). The PSP has a similarly simple setup interface.

Both devices also have advanced settings for security and manual network configurations, so they shouldn’t have any problems getting a connection.

And in the other corner, our plain-Jane mobile phone and the Dopod 577W smartphone are very different devices – the former is a no-frills device while the latter is a feature-packed handset with an advanced operating system (Windows Mobile 5 Mobile Edition).

Both use GPRS to connect to the Internet, which has superior range to WiFi. These are true on-the-go Internet solutions.

One word of warning for GPRS/EDGE/3G users out there though – you may get addicted to surfing the Net on your phone so much that you’ll end up incurring a major phone bill at the end of the month! Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Coming back to the “getting connected” part, there was a time when configuring a regular phone or smartphone to connect to either GPRS, EDGE or 3G/UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) could only be done by tech-heads.

However, these days, most of these settings can be configured for you by simply making a call to your telco and have them send the settings to your phone via SMS (short message service).

For more advanced smarpthones, like the Dopod 577W or the O2 XDA Atom, there are utilities built-in to help you configure the myriad of settings.

One interesting thing about the Dopod 577W is that it’s also got a built-in WiFi adaptor, which means that it’ll connect to WiFi hotspots too.

If you’re wondering, it’s also possible to pair a PDA with a mobile phone via Bluetooth. While this allows the PDA to utilise the phone’s GPRS Internet connection, the setup process is extremely complicated and is best ignored unless you really want to use it.

With that out of the way, here’s a quick look at how these devices fare against each other.

Sony's new Bravias to include 46-inch, LCD

Sony has taken the wraps off of the new Bravia LCD TVs that the company first showed off at CES. Unfortunately, the 82-incher they wowed us with is just a "technology statement," according to the company. The shipping models will top off with the 46-inch KDL-46S2000, which will have an MSRP of $4,499 and specs that include a built-in HD tuner, 1366x768 resolution, and a 1300:1 contrast ratio. If you're looking to spend a little less, the new Bravia S line also includes a 40-incher $2,999, a 32-inch set for $1,999, and a 26-inch model at $1,499. The new models are expected to ship in May.

M.Mobile aims to produce 25 million phones in 5 years

KUALA LUMPUR: M Mobile Sdn Bhd, which is 30% owned by Kosmo Technology Industrial Bhd, has set a target of producing 25 million mobile phones over the next five years.

Chairman Norhamzah Nordin said the total investment cost would be RM300mil, staggered over the period.

“If we achieve the projected production figures, it would make us among the top 10 mobile manufacturers in the world,” he told reporters after M Mobile launched its first model of the M10, the first locally-designed and developed mobile phone, yesterday.

The ceremony was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Norhamzah said the company had recently secured a contract to produce 100,000 mobile phones this year for Intelpro, an Africa-based company. However, the management declined to disclose details of the contract.

The company had also secured a five-year contract worth RM2bil with Saudi Television Manufacturing Co (Satjet) under which M Mobile would be the sole supplier of mobile phones for Satjet, which had committed to buying at least one million phones annually.

“The Saudi deal also entails us setting up an assembly line in Saudi Arabia to make the phones. The plant will begin operation in May,” said chief executive officer Zainudin Mohd Salleh.

The company is also eyeing other foreign markets like Indonesia, India, Russia as well as Asean countries.

M Mobile, which spent RM15mil in research and development last year, has targeted to sell about 300,000 units of M10 locally this year.

It also plans to invest RM25mil in the next 10 months to develop six more models to be launched this year.

“We aim to sell one million mobile phones by year-end,” added Zainuddin.

There are three variants of M10, priced between RM499 and RM555.

M Mobile plans to increase its workforce from the current 70 engineers to about 200 by year-end in line with the company's overseas expansion plan.

Malaysia's first homegrown cellular phone, M.Mobile, which was designed and developed in this country, made its debut on Friday.

Named M 10, this newly launched model not only has those standard features common in this industry but offers Muslim users fresh alternatives, said M.Mobile's Chief Executive Officer Zainudin Mohd Salleh.

Equipped with Islamic features, the M 10 model can calculate prayer time, broadcast azan (the summons to prayer) and show the prayer direction, said Zainudin at the launching ceremony in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel here.

"We hope in our own small way, we are able to contribute towards the government's effort in transforming our country into a nation of multi-skilled, multi-talented knowledge workers of world standards," said Zainudin.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahamad Badawi attended the launching ceremony. While expressing his appreciation for the achievements made by the young company, Badawi also reminded the company to ensure its products can be equally accepted by non-Muslim customers.

Meanwhile, Zainudin said 90 percent of the M.Mobile products targets overseas markets. The company earlier inked a deal with the Saudi Arabian Television Manufacturing Co. Ltd. to supply one million units of mobile phones per year for the next five years, He added.

Motorola RAZR V3x

Ok, so I get to play around with the V3X everytime I'm at work as my store fone, I did say if I could be bothered I'd post some photo's taken by it as well as a short comparison and a brief set of impressions so here you have it.

Although not exactly a fair comparison, it's the only one I could make at the time as I did not have my K750i on me. Otherwise I'm sure you guys would agree, the V3X vs the K750i and D600 would have made a better comparison.

Build Quality and Design
Aesthetically the mobile is gorgeous. Our Voda titanium finish version in my opinion looks the best out of the different colours (the one pictured). The design is a perfect blend of cutting edge futuristic sleekness, mixed in with some more organic shapes to make the fone more ergonomic. It feels comfortable and has some nice finishing touches such as the glossy glass mimicking black screen panels. The keypad is much improved over the V3, giving more responsive feedback and a subtle click with each and every tap.

I know I was caught previously criticising the fones build quality. But I retract my opinion. Compared to the V3 it is indeed, not the best quality build as the jump from metal to plastic stings.
However upon spending more time with the mobile, I can safely say the build quality is fairly decent. It’s pretty well put together and elements of the fone blend nicely with the design (screen, keypad, rear speaker and back cover release button) whereas others don’t go down to well. The side buttons are still cumbersome and un-responsive. Obvious build quality gripes are the cheapy plastic finish (though the glossy well built screens make up for it). The main thing that annoys me about the fones build is without doubt the creaky back cover which feels cheap and tacky.

UI
Next thing. The UI. This is going to sound like a bold statement. But for once I prefer the Vodafone UI version over the Moto one. Shock horror how dare he say it? Well, let me explain. Capabilities wise it is pretty much exactly the same as Moto’s. Giving you near enough all the same options and so forth. However, I actually prefer the look and usability of Vodafone’s UI version. It looks cleaner and is simpler. There are also some nice UI aesthetic touches (that stupidly I did not get a photo of) such as the fact that all menu’s now have opaque option bars and so forth. For instance when taking pictures or writing texts. The option menu bars at the bottom corners are only semi-visible. You get this semi faded menu look dotted all around the UI and it makes for a better looking and less intrusive menu system. The main menu icons are still pretty drab, but then again the standard Moto ones aren’t exactly mind blowing.
Size
This is one department where many of you might be slightly disappointed. The fone is really not that slim nor small anymore. The V3 esque design concept of pocket ultra slim has gone out the window. It’s still well sized given the feature set, but as you can see with the pics compared to the size of the 903, they speak for themselves.

The screen size of the 903 is also slightly bigger. Both are fantastic quality, with the 903 taking it just slightly on colour and clarity. After more use with the V3X I can safely say the screen is one of the best on the market. It is one of the brightest and most detailed out there, if a little too bold at times. But it's a great technological feat none the less.

I cant say I’m overly impressed with the V3X’s camera. It’s not terrible, but it’s not that good either. In fact it’s fair to say it’s one of the poorer performing 2mp cameras on the market. The K750i, D600 and N90 all have better cameras. One thing I will give the V3X’s camera is colour clarity. It’s very good. Colours are accurate and true to reality. What kills it’s game is the overt smearing and edge softness the camera suffers. The lines are never defined, and everything looks smudged. This irradicates a certain amount of noise, but much like the N90’s camera, images are not as crisp as they could be.

Video recording
Here the V3X fares pretty badly. Even at the highest quality (examples below) the quality is pretty poor. It’s very hard to make out any detail and everything is again smeared and un-defined.

The video is also slightly juddery and lacks that smooth flow to it. I’d say it was comparable to the K750i’s video. Though even that is debatable when considering the newest and oldest SE FW models. Colour and sound pickup however both are very good.

There is only a one stage zoom, so there is a lot to be desired in this area. One good thing about the zoom however is that virtually no quality is lost in it’s transition. The resolution of video is also very small, it’s high time Motorola caught up in the video recording area as the resolution and quality is not up to the latest industry standards. Especially for a fone of this caliber and price.

There is very little comparison with the 903 to be had. The 903’s video is far superior in pretty much every way. With and industry leading zoom (you have to check it out), quality and colour accuracy that’s very accurate and a level of smoothness that comes well commended.

Opinions
Other things that are worth the mention are that the speaker volume is very good. It’s loud and the quality is pretty decent all things considered. Reception quality and ear volume also come highly commended.

I wish I could say more about the fone, but unfortunately I have not quite used it enough to make a fully realised conclusion. For instance I am yet to use the MP3 player and test battery life. I assume the battery life will be above average as the battery from what I could tell was (I think) 900mAh and looked a decent large size.

The UI was improved aesthetically anyhow, and the thing runs fast and efficient. In gallery mode images are quick to load up and close and everything seems to run without a hitch. It will be interesting to see how well this mobile sells, as it almost loses it’s fashion statement appeal and high quality build that the original V3 had for a more financially aware and multimedia focused feature set.

Will it be as popular? I honestly don’t think so. V3’s unique metal finish and size is what most appealed to users, I think the V3X tries too much and never really excels at any of the things it pertains to be.

As a style fone, it’s too big and the quality just isn’t quite there. As a multimedia fone it loses out to other mobiles such as the W900i, 903 and N series. Perhaps it slots in nicely as an all rounded flip fone, but that’s completely down to personal opinion. I personally think it’s a decent handset and I could see myself owning one. Only problem is, it could have been a lot better. Prices for the device at the moment are far too high, expect the price to drop in the near future at which point the V3X will be a solid choice.

Philips has been treating journos, dealers and assorted hangers on to a few days in a converted palace in the mountains between Rome and Naples. However, before you get too jealous, the gathered hacks have been forced to quaff triple shot Espressos in a bid to keep up with the huge amount of product the company has pencilled in for 2005.

One highlight is the world's first hard disk player aimed at sporty types. Set to debut under the Philips Nike banner the PSA610 features some very clever technology which ensures that it is only the player's owner who jogs and not the on board hard disk. The player uses a buffer system to sample the user's music choice which it then stores, leaving the hard disk to power down.

Philips claims the whole process takes around thirty seconds. The benefits of the hard disk are much more storage than rival flash players, 3 Gigabytes in this instance, yet a retail price of just £180. Battery life is ten hours and the model will spin both MP3 and WMA (including DRM downloads) files.

With its circular shape it alos looks very different from the flash mob too. The bad news is it won't be on sale until the summer.

The CNGTEK MP3 sunglasses (available in black or gray) are boxed up nicely from the factory with the shades, USB cable, instructions, soft cloth for cleaning and mini-CD-ROM with drivers for Windows 98/SE/ME/2000/XP/Mac OS. A charging adapter is an optional accessory, which probably should be standard, but the eight hour play time on the included Li-ION battery should give you plenty of audio fulfillment without having to recharge immediately. The directions are in English and are easy to understand to operate all functions on the shades. If you are tech-savvy at all, you won’t need those directions. Just let your fingers do the walking over the nicely placed controls and you will be ready for an infusion of tunes directly to your ear canals quickly. By the way, if you are overly concerned with having too large or small of a cranium, noggin’ or head, don’t worry; one size sunglasses fits all and in a snug way too to keep them from falling off at inopportune moments. You also may be a bit squeamish about the “looks” of the battery compartment and flash drive unit expanded on the bows of the shades, but don’t be. They’ve designed them seamlessly into the flexible bows with panache for suave contours to cover some of that obligatory bulk up.

Yes, they DO look hip and all eyes will be upon you (out of envy and not because you think you look like X-Men’s Cyclops either). Slip them on your head and the adjustable ear buds inside your yearning hammer, anvil and stirrup (yep, the anatomically short words for the tools inside your ear to receive those stimulating audible signals…not too loud, now). The ear buds fit well and they allow you to stretch them with the short, coiled wires or simply clip them on the ends of the bows into the wire slots to hold them in just the right position. Now, you’re ready to begin your untethered journey into the music kingdom.

The control buttons are all placed on the right bow (top and bottom), which makes it slightly difficult for the left-handers out there, but, hey, you always wanted to be ambidextrous right? The power button is nearest the lens of the shades. Push once to turn on and you see the red (power/USB) and blue (MP3) LED lights on the side of the bow illuminate (looks really cool at night!). The sunglasses are preloaded with a few songs for you to test before you hook up your USB and load your own precious music. Press the power button again and the sounds come alive. No fumbling around to move wires out of the way, looking at screens or worrying about dropping your new purchase. Want to partake in a conversation or listen to someone ask you where you got those? Press the power button again to pause or allow the shades to automatically power down after a predetermined time. It also serves as a mode button to switch between functions described below.

Are you a musician, author, thinker, dreamer or just someone who likes to talk a lot? Well, use the hidden microphone incorporated into the sunglasses bow and record your instant and world-changing thoughts for playback later. Take dictation and give it to your secretary when you arrive at the office and you won’t miss out on any important ideas you had before the gab session, er, ah, meeting in the morning. The yellow LED light will mesmerize you when recording. These shades also come in varying delectable flash memory sizes for your personal pleasure (256, 512MB and 1GB).

Yes, it would be nice to have that SD/MMC/CF external storage options, but, alas, then you would look a little like a geek with all that bulk emanating from your head. So, for now, just wait until those nanometer storage options of the future are here. While listening to your favorite songs, switch to the next or previous with the FF or REW buttons on the underside of the right bow with a simple tap of either. Those buttons also double as volume increase/decrease (just press and hold to blow your eardrums or save them for many years to come). Last button is toward the rear of the right bow. Press it for random play or to delete songs, recordings and files in storage. To charge/recharge your battery, open the attached rubber strap covering the USB jack, plug in the included USB cable and the “charging” LED light on the side of the right bow glows showing you the unit is receiving “juice”. While the USB cable is connected, go to your files and download/upload music, recordings, photos or files for transfer simply using the copy/paste or drag/drop method.

The sunglasses bows also have notches in the ends to allow you to attach your favorite shade neck straps to always keep them “on” you no matter where you go. The lenses are polycarbonate and slightly tinted. Yes, I did try them at night (not just to see the lights either), but I don’t recommend this even though you can see quite well. The sound pumped out of these shades was amazing for such a small form factor. The audiometer registered similar results as CNGTEK listed in their specs for these shades. I tracked signal to noise ratio of 82dB, but, alas, the type of audiometer you use will give varying results.

The frequency response was dead on with the specifications listed. I used the glasses in almost all environments (exercise, driving, motorcycle, walking, crowded/noisy streets and shopping centers) and experienced no “interference” with my preferred way of listening; meaning NO outside interruptions! So, if you plan on traveling on a plane, train or automobile, forget using noise-canceling headphones. Place these shades on and you will have no trouble not hearing the person next to you who wants to talk the entire trip. In addition, the tinted, raked-back lenses provide a relaxing, peaceful effect for your eyes to go to that “place” while hearing your best tunes. They also block out 100% of UVA/UVB/UVC and that bad blue light. The nose bridge on the shades was a little tight (no, I don’t have a big nose, thank you), but with a little ingenuity on your part you can make simple adjustments to this area by padding them with black or gray foam for comfort or, well, if your nose is too big; visit the friendly surgeons from “Nip Tuck”; I mean, your local plastic surgeon.
Seriously, though, you should have no problems with fit as I tested them on children, adults, men, and women (ok, so it’s up to you to do that for your pet if you think that will soothe the savage beast). Lastly, the included sunglasses hard-sided, zippered carrying pouch is very nice as the inside is form-fitted with foam and a belt clip to offer yet another carrying option.

And, as always, I have a little wish list I like to include, as you know everything can be improved upon:

iDog Review

It's not often you get a little slice of robotics in your Christmas stocking but that's what happened to LP this year when he got a Sega iDog for a present and in time honoured tradition enough time has elapsed for a gift to become a review.

The Sega iDog may not be quite as advanced as Sony's Aibo but then it's under £30 compared to the £1100+ you can spend on an Aibo. However that massive gap in price does not mean your iDog is devoid of features, far from it. In fact the i-Dog was one of the top selling Christmas gifts of 2005 with its unique combination of geeky technological wizardry and cut style that will even have your girlfriend cooing over it.

The small box that the iDog ships in looks very eastern and opening it and being confronted by instructions in Japanese only was a bit of a shock, but we soon managed to locate some English ones with a quick Google. All we needed to do was to insert 3 AAA batteries into the chest of our little K9 (which needs a small Phillips screwdriver) and our iDog chirped into life. Sega's puppy has 3 main ways of communicating with its owner, firstly the dogs face lights up in a bright pattern of LED's of varying colours and shapes, then it not only chirps but can play whole tunes and lastly it moves its head and ears.

When you first fire up your new i-Dog it is a blank canvass a newborn as they term it, this means it has not yet former its personality and can be trained to behave the way you want. A new iDog starts quite happy, you can tell the level of content ness by the colour and speed of lights on it's nose, Green is happy, orange less so and red unhappy. Plus the lights circle round faster if the iDog is playful and slower if he is resting.

i-Dog is unhappyInteracting with the Sega puppy is simple enough, he has a button on the end of his nose and two on the top of his head, plus you can twiddle his tail to get other reactions. The iDog loves to be touched and this is one of the main ways to keep him happy, the nose button can be used to pet him and to trigger bursts of musical and light displays, the head buttons have more of a calming influence. There are also a number of pre programmed moves that holding buttons for longer periods can trigger, for example holding the head buttons makes the i-Dog run though his repertoire of 10 songs.

As with any new born you need to feed this techno puppy, but his food of choice is sound or to be more precise music. There are two methods of feeding the i-Pooch firstly he has an inbuilt microphone so placing him near a source of music means he can lap up some tunes, you can tell he's happy with this by how his lights pulsate and the colour, plus when he's had his fill he'll play "little green jug" to let you know that's enough. The second method is to use the iDog as an MP3 speaker system, by hooking your iPod (or other digital audio player) to the 3.5mm jack socket in the pooches hind leg.

iDog plays a tune with a lightshowPlaying some music to the iDog makes him dance to the beat with a shake of the head and flap of the ears, the speaker isn't that loud but enough to hear the track, quality is pretty poor and the sound of the robotics is almost as loud as the audio reproduction. Luckily Sega do not promote the ipooch on the basis of it being an MP3 speaker system so we can forgive the audio playback as a gimmick and a pretty cool one at that.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and the i-Dog is quick to flatter as it switches to mimic mode, speak to your i-Dog for a few seconds and the centre light on his nose switches first blue and then red to indicate he is listening. Then he proceeds to mimic you in a rather unintelligible electro dog language and with a shake of the head, but listen carefully and you can detect some elements of your words in the pace and beat of his response.

The Sega iDog is really a bit of a novelty but one which any techie will love, it's the lower end of robotics and by no means a Sony Aibo, but for under £30 you do get a relatively complex e pet which responds to music and will be the centre of attention.

This was my first venture into the world of the MP3 - can I say I'm impressed? It may not be the most attractive player, but hey, looks aren't everything. I think this is a bargain, considering what you get for your money. It does everything it says on the tin. This has to be the best mp3 player yet! V@mp mp3 player definitely makes all the new iPod Nanos look like crap, I got this for Christmas last year and I was extremely pleased with the result. My mates all walk around with their cheap Tesco rubbish mp3s and wish they had mine :D I mean what more could you ask for in an mp3 player? It has everything!! The thing that surprised me most was that there is a speaker on the outside of the mp3 player, so if you lose or forget your headphones you don't need them - just turn up the music and play it out loud so everyone can enjoy :P!! It's also very stylish, I love the 7 colour back light, if you go onto the display and choose to change the colour, the different colours have cute little pictures on them e.g.: yellow = Duck. You've gotta love the speakers, they are just awesome!! You can take them around with you wherever you go. And you can also plug other mp3 players into it!! And the swivel USB port is really handy because you won't get it damaged as with other mp3 players. The V@mp mp3 player is really cool because it's so tiny, my bro's have massive IRiver ones which even though they store a lot, they are quite expensive and are too big to fit in your pocket. The V@MP MP3 is my first MP3 player and I have to say it's everything I was looking for in an MP3 player. I mean today you get all these very expensive GB iPods that keep getting better and better but eventually they run out of memory. So at least with this one you can always just keep saving songs onto different memory cards plus you have the two-way headphone sockets which saves you having to buy a headphone splitter that costs you an extra £5. Easy to set up, good sound on the included speakers and a nice and handy little neck strap and bag for safe keeping. Great product - 9/10 (say no to expensive iPods etc)

This JF1 Electric Go Kart has caused all sorts of havoc round the IWOOT building. It's only really made for kids up to 14 years old, but we couldn't resist the temptation to bomb around on it. Its unique 'lean to steer' design removes the need for a steering wheel, you simply lean your body left or right to steer it - which is just so much fun as you're literally steering by the seat of your pants. Dino-robot is latest toy from Furby creator

When Caleb Chung has a big idea, the toy world pays attention. The co-inventor of the Furby doll created a sensation in 1998 that sold 40 million of the talking furry creatures.

Now at a Bay Area start-up, he is launching a new dinosaur robot for kids that he hopes will build upon his dream of creating lifelike, emotionally responsive mechanical animals.

Chung's new brainstorm is called Pleo and it will debut this fall. He is unveiling it today at the Demo conference in Scottsdale, Ariz., and has also taken the wraps off his Emeryville-based company, Ugobe, which is making Pleo.

``People are in love with robots, but the feedback we have is people need to have a more engaging relationship with their products,'' said Bob Christopher, chief executive of Ugobe. ``They want to treat something like a pet. So we need robots that show and feel emotion and that evolve over time.''

The $200 Pleo dinosaur promises to one-up Chung's earlier creation. While Furby had two computer brains, Pleo will have seven computer brains that control 14 motors and 38 sensors. Christopher says the combination of intelligence, precision movement and personality will make Pleo a believable, lifelike pet.

``This robot is going to have organic movement, so that it seems to move and behave like something real,'' Christopher said.

In an age when robotic toys have become a multibillion-dollar business, Ugobe will have plenty of company with rivals such as Wowie's mechanical dinosaurs, Lego's Mindstorm robots and Honda's Asimo humanoid robots. Sony recently pulled the plug on its Aibo robot dogs, but Ugobe isn't worried because Sony's high-priced dogs, which cost $2,000 and up, appealed to gadget freaks.

Ugobe (a play on ``you go become'') is aiming for a more mainstream market with much cheaper robots.

``Conceptually, what they've got is very interesting,'' said Tim Bajarin, an analyst at Creative Strategies in San Jose. ``If they can deliver fluid motion and lifelike functionality and intelligence, they have something that breaks new ground and could be quite a hit in the toy market.''

Pleo is the first of a line of ``designer life forms'' that Chung and Ugobe plan to create that combine the latest in artificial intelligence, robotics, mechanical engineering and toy design. The dinosaur will have ``neural network'' software -- a program that behaves in a brainlike way as it processes many pieces of information to determine its actions.

The 3-year-old company's robots will be designed to elicit emotional responses, be aware of their environment and change behavior over time. Pleo is a baby ``camerasaurus,'' a real dinosaur that scientists describe as a Jurassic-era equivalent of a cow. Pleo will be about 20 inches long. But Christopher says it will be smart enough to walk along a table, sense the edge and turn back with a whimper and the appropriate emotional body language.

Dubbed a ``modern Gepetto'' (the creator of the puppet Pinocchio that comes to life) by Wired magazine, the 49-year-old Chung designs toys in isolation from the rest of the staff at his home in Boise, Idaho, where he lives with his wife and three daughters.

He grew up in Watsonville. His father was a psychologist and the family moved frequently. Chung became introverted and spent a lot of time ``in corners by myself taking apart toys.'' Among his favorite toys was ``Thing maker,'' which allowed him to create new plastic figures from molds.

He became a comedian and a mime before he began designing toys. In 1998, he co-designed Furby for Mattel and collected royalties on part of the $1 billion in revenues that Hasbro reaped from Furby. He continued to run small companies that designed toys for big toy companies. From the early 1980s, he dreamed of doing the ultimate child's pet.

``I've always been in love with dinosaurs because of their long necks and tails that suggest such fluid movement,'' said Chung, who talks excitedly about his creations. ``We want to create a scientifically accurate dinosaur, like the babies in ``Jurassic Park'' that hatch from eggs. Isn't that a wonderful moment as this impossible thing comes to life?''

But with Pleo, Chung decided to do a start-up that would handle everything, from the creation of the robots to hiring contract manufacturers in China to make them. Weinstein said the 25-person company has raised $2.5 million to date and will raise more money later this year. Ugobe's advisory board includes Steve Mayer, co-founder of Atari, Curtis Sasaki, a former Sun Microsystems executive, and Gordon Radley, former president of Lucasfilm.

Christopher said the company hopes to make a million units for the fall and hopes to sign up retailers to sell it at the annual Toy Fair show in New York in mid-February. Investors in the company include various angel investors, including some from China who are helping to get manufacturing deals arranged.

Ugobe's strategy as a start-up is to create products that will market themselves and thus don't need the distribution muscle of the large toy makers, Chung said.

Over time, Ugobe plans to make more sophisticated, lifelike robots. Chung said he has been waiting for improvements in technology to make possible sophisticated toys with cheaper and cheaper price tags.

While other entrepreneurs who hit it big sometimes retire, Chung says he still has a lot of fun working on new creations.

Everyone rushes to get gifts for their loved ones. The new XDA Atom by O2 almost missed that rush period. It initially arrived in small quantities to limited shops and telcos. I remembered that was already the eve of Christmas. I'm pretty sure many did not get their gifts on time.

I was all excited about this product as well. I received a call from my telco 2 hours after I booked it personally. I went back that very moment to collect the device, hot from the stocks. After 24 hours with the Atom, I realized it's a rushed product. Here's a mini-review to warm up the atom scene and help users decide if they really need the atom. Lets get onto it!

The Package

It came in a beautiful "jewelry" box, with an embedded magnetic catch! The surface was smooth, like some book covers. Accessories came in in separate clearly-labeled boxes. That was pretty standard, consisting of manuals, CD, USB/power cables, battery and wired headset. And yes, the memory card is missing this time.

Earphones that came with the headset looked pretty neat. Trust me, they're the worst ever made for a human ear!

The Build
I've heard users on the net complaint about the battery cover being loose. Well, for my set, there was no such problem. There was nothing coming off. In fact, I feel the built is better then my previous XDA2 Mini. That is mainly because everything is so "tight" and in place. There's no squeaks nor loose parts. My Mini's top back cover (where the camera is) used to move a little.

The buttons were firm. No problems about that. I did prefer the volume slider on the Mini, as compared to 2 volume buttons on the Atom. I guess this probably allowed the manufacturer to cost down. Speaking of which, the Atom is manufactured by Quanta (touted to be one of the largest OEM notebook manufacturing), as compared to HTC which makes many other O2 products. Battery life for the Atom should be about the same as Mini, or longer. But with WiFi switched on, forget about surfing long hours without a charging cable around.

The device only accepts the mini-SD, which I believe might be the future of all devices which will downsize. This may be a disadvantage to many who already own SD cards. Mini-SD may not be that of a bad thing as usually the cards come in an SD-adapter, which turns the cards compatible to SD.

As for the "so-called" 2 megapixel camera, Mini users will not be surprised. It indeed is 2MP, but it's just as bad. Perhaps it's a little better in terms of compression, but the ISO levels are probably high at lowly-lit areas. This causes the pictures to be noisy. When there's plenty of light, It tends to take better pictures than the Mini. Camera takes ages to load. It's about a good 15 seconds, from the instance you press the side button, till the "hourglass" goes off. As for the built-in flashlight, It's better off being used as a torchlight. I have some sample un-edited pictures here. Do take a look.

The finishing would be a problem for many. It only comes in piano black, and its a fingerprint magnet. At the same time, I feel this gives a very classy impression on the user. I've gotten used to the finishing. It turns out to be without fingerprints each time I take it out from my pocket! I simply love the size and the 10 grams off compared to the Mini.

Windows Mobile 5
Here's the main juice of the Atom... Initial startup took really long, but that was normal from a hard reset. Standard Windows Mobile installation took place. Upon full boot up, The screen appeared to be much clearer than the Mini. This is mainly because it has a slightly smaller screen and supports 18 bit of colour.

At first, the software seemed to be snappy. Upon further usage, it started to lag. It lagged real bad (well, this is purely my own opinion as I'm pretty used to speedy PDAs in the past like the hp2210 and O2mini). It took up to a while 2 seconds to open up my SMS inbox. I ended up reading up on the net on how to speed up Windows Mobile 5. Check out the tips section as I listed some registry tweaks to speed up the performance. And yes, it did a very noticeable speed increment.

like all new operating systems, compatibility will be a problem. I used to depend on a bass/treble applet for all my music needs. It used to give incredible bass to my earphones without distortion. Sadly, it doesn't work anymore, and now it gives out crappy music. Themes from WM2003 no longer work anymore, as the top/bottom bar sizes are different. It's just a matter of time more software for WM5 is released.

As for managing your SMSes, I found WM5 to be an advantage. I can "save as read" directly from it's notification, which does not come in a form of a bubble anymore.

All notifications will stay in a form of a softkey. It's a pity the Atom didn't have any hardware keys to make use of the softkeys. Other thing about WM5 is that it turns on the display almost instantly when powered on. This is compared to the Mini, which takes about 1 second to do that, partly because of the SD card initialization.

Included Software
There were additional software worth mentioning (not necessarily worthwhile).

O2 MediaPlus: basically it give a Windows media center outlook to Atom. Pretty useless I must say, as all it does it open up other media related apps like photo album, radio, etc. Other than that, you can add your photo in the front screen.

Equalizer: Mind you, this actually works. They have 13 presents like bass, classic, dance, rock, etc. When I tried high bass on my *really good Sony NUDE-EX earphones, the music cracked! Something's wrong somewhere. It consisted of a pre-amp setting as well. So I suppose you got to lower the volume to lower the distortion.

FM Radio: As guessed, it controls your radio. There are stations already pre-setted for the Asian market, so that's a bit of a convenience. One downside You can only launch the radio application if you have any earphones connected to the device. Reception was pretty average, depending on your location. It's kinda bad that you can't record in stereo :(

O2 SMS Plus: I haven't really tried this, but it allows chatting via SMS. You can view your message and your recipient's message at the same time. One thing that impressed me. It allows scheduled SMSes. that means you can wish your friend "happy birthday" exactly at that moment you want the SMS to be sent. Sweet!

O2 Self Diagnostic: This utility offers a guide to detecting malfunctions. Pretty nifty, if you're testing your set before accepting it from the retailer.

The Phone
The Atom does not come with the Phonepad input like the Mini, as the software belongs to HTC. In other words, No T9 for the phone. I must say O2 should have put this requirement as a priority, instead of giving fancy stuffs like MediaPlus app. Anyway, I managed to get the Phonepad from my mini's extended ROM! Check out the tips section for this.

Another problem is that the phone is soft. It's quite difficult to hear the other party calling in a busy environment. However, the reverse seem ok. Ringtones happen to be soft as well despite the stereo speakers in front. I'm not too concern about the ringtones though. It all depends on what type of midi you're playing. I can also edit wav files to increase the peak of the audio, before putting it back into the Atom. Generally I feel wma files play faster and thus, may be more appropriate as ringtones.

There is yet another change which is to the microphone handling with headsets jacked in. Previously with my Mini, when a phone call comes in, I just needed to press the talk button and talk into the mic with my earphones still jacked in. I will hear the music turning off and the phone ringing instead. Now with the Atom, as long as my earphones are jacked in, the device microphone will be turned off as well! I'm using a 3rd party earphone, therefore, I need to un-plug them before I answer the phone normally. I hope there are hacks to overcome this!

Tips and Tweaks
This is what I gathered from sites all over the place like http://www.xda-developers.com.

Speed Up Windows Mobile 5:
Use a registry editor like RescoExplorer 2005 and set the following keys to the values listed:

Soft-reset your device after the settings. You should be able feel it being snappier.

ActiveSync turning on automatically:
If you happen to have your ActiveSync turning on every now and then, it could be it's been set to do so. here's a workaround:

1. Start up ActiveSync on your Atom
2. Tap the menu tab/soft key and tap "Add Server Source"
3. Configure a server source with a dummy IP address, user id, password and domain name these do not have to be real
4. Once configured you should have another sync source show up on your main AS screen...continue on.
5. Tap the menu soft key again and you should see that the sync schedule option is no longer greyed out.
6. Change your schedule from a timed automatic start of AS to manual under both fields
7. If you try to sync now, AS will try to contact your imaginary exchange server and that will take forever until it times out, so you can now delete the exchange server from your list of sync sources. Your changes to the sync schedule will remain and will survive soft resets too.

Phonepad input (T9):
You may use the phonepad application which was taken out from my O2 mini. Just copy the .cab file over to you device and run it from there. Soft-reset your atom after installing. It should work beautifully! Please note, the phonepad software is licenced for exclusive HTC products like O2 mini, and may not be legally rightful to be installed in non-HTC products like the Atom. I claim no responsibility of misuse of this software. You may request a copy of phonepad here.

Please take note that whatever tweaks I have here at your disposal are in your own risk. I personally have tried them successfully. If you do have any more methods on how to improve the experience on the Atom, do drop me a line here..

Conclusion
This product definitely awed many by it's looks and size. however, I would advice anyone without any urgent use for this device to wait longer. Software updates and more WM5 support have yet to surface. Hopefully the speed issues are settled then. Other than that, I believe it's a fine product. It gives consumers to hope for much more smaller and slimmer products in the future.
